I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE

Marvin Gaye teve uma carreira curta, mas mesmo assim influenciou gerações de vários artistas de diversos estilos e gêneros. Ele começou a fazer sucesso nos anos 60, pela gravadora Motown. Fez parcerias com Diana Ross e Tammi Terrel, que logo depois morreu de tumor cerebral, abalando profundamente o cantor.

Nos anos 70 lançou discos clássicos como ‘Let’s Get it On’, ‘I Want You’ e ‘Here my Dear’, que foi claramente num divórcio conturbado com Ana Gordy, herdeira do império Motown, que chegou a processar Gaye por invasão da privacidade. No final dessa década Gaye iniciou a gravação de um projeto intitulado ‘Lover Man’, mas problemas financeiros retardaram o projeto que acabou sendo abandonado pelo artista, mas essas gravações se encontram aqui para quem quiser baixar.

No início dos anos 80 que acabou se transformando no complexo e extremamente autoral ‘In Our Lifetime? ’, mas a Motown reeditou e remixou o material sem autorização de Gaye, e lançou o disco omitindo o ponto de interrogação em ‘In Our Lifetime’, que para ele era fundamental para uma conotação irônica.

Desiludido com a gravadora, Gaye rescindiu o contrato com a Motown e assinou com a Columbia Records, onde gravou ‘Midnight Love’ contendo o sucesso ‘Sexual healing’, disco com o qual ganhou os dois primeiros e últimos 'Grammy Awards' da vida. Após encerrar uma bem sucedida turnê em 1983, Gaye se refugiou na casa dos pais, onde após uma briga com o pai, Marvin Gaye Sr., foi baleado e morreu um dia antes de seu aniversário de 45 anos.

A Columbia Records ainda lançou dois discos póstumos com material não aproveitado, ‘Dream of a Lifetime’ e ‘Romaticaly Yours’. A Motown também lançou um disco póstumo com versões de clássicos românticos que sempre fizeram a cabeça do cantor, ‘Vulnerable’, que em 1987 foi induzido ao ‘Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame’.

Então para quem chorou com a 'Sacerdotisa do Soul', quem sabe o feriado deixe mais tempo pra pegar mais uma discografia especial da soul music, e escutar o som dos boatos do passarinho cantor.
