OS MESTRES DO MENTO JAMAICANO

Os Jolly Boys são mestres do mento, que é um gênero musical jamaicano, anterior ao ska, ao rocksteady e ao reggae. Era o mento que se dançava na Jamaica, antes de todos esses estilos, mais conhecidos da ilha. O mento pode ser facilmente confundido por calipso, mas possui elementos e divisões rítmicas únicas da cultura jamaicana.



A banda foi formada nos anos 50 e continua na ativa até hoje. Os Jolly Boys são formados por Albert Minott nos vocais e guitarra, Joseph ‘Powder’ Bennett nos backing vocals, maracas e “bolador”, Derrick ‘Johnny’ Henry na marumba box e backing vocals, Allan Swymmer na percussão, Egbert Watson no banjo e os novos integrantes Donald Waugh no banjo, Lenford ‘Brutus’ Richards na guitarra e Dale Virgo na percussão, sem falar na participação de Cedric Brooks na flauta e sax tenor e Daniel Neely também no banjo.



Nesse disco, a banda gravou clássicos contemporâneos como ‘Do it again’ do ‘Steely Dan’, ‘Rehab’ de Amy Winehouse, ‘Blue monday’ do ‘New Order’, ‘You can't always get what you want’ dos ‘Rolling Stones’, ‘Riders on the storm’ dos ‘Doors’, ‘The passenger’ de Iggy Pop e ‘I fought the law’, que ficou mais conhecida pelo ‘Clash’, mas que é originalmentes dos ‘Crickets’, entre outros.
